Over the decades, Muncieâs taverns served up cold beer and hot death. From the cityâs earliest days until the end of many neighborhood taverns and hole-in-the-wall bars as the communityâs industrial age fadedâtaking workers and their paychecks with itâMuncieâs bars and watering holes were known as a good place to have a cold brew, meet your future spouse and gambleâ¦sometimes with your life. Tavern patrons, with a bellyful of beer or whiskey, were known to start a fight, only to be thrown out of the premises by the bartender or bouncer.
In July 1953, however, mayhem came from behind the bar, when bartender Delmo Cooper allegedly shot and killed Melvin Grubbs outside the Fireside Inn, on U.S. 35 South, just outside the Muncie city limits. Initial accounts indicated that Cooper, who confessed to the shooting early on but was acquitted in two separate trials in the years that followed, was incensed that Grubbs used vulgar language in front of Cooperâs wife. But testimony that followed indicated a more complicated, personal beef on Cooperâs part.
The shooting occurred on Cooperâs twenty-eighth birthday. Grubbs was twenty-three. Newspaper accounts focused to a great extent on Cooperâs looks, noting in the second paragraph that he was âruggedly handsome.â Also noted was that he was âdressed neatly in a white shirt and well-pressed trousers.â
